IWMAC software optimises energy efficiency in existing buildings, lowering emissions and costs in the property sector. “Energy prices and consumption in buildings are increasing quickly. We can’t afford to wait years for costly renovations or new smart buildings. We need to act now,” says Trond Øystein Bjørnnes, CEO of IWMAC AS, a Kiona company.

Automatically Optimize Energy Consumption and Waste in Buildings

Buildings account for 36 per cent of Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions, caused mainly by heating and cooling systems. Moreover, 75 per cent of all buildings are energy inefficient, and forecasts indicate that 95 per cent of today’s buildings will still be in use 50 years from now. Therefore, optimising the sector’s energy consumption is key in the EU’s effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55 per cent by 2030.

IWMAC software gives full control over buildings’ energy consumption

IWMAC is a cloud-based SCADA software solution that integrates all technical systems in non-residential buildings, such as ventilation, heating, cooling, lighting and refrigeration. Property managers gain complete control over the building’s systems, as well as its energy consumption.

Property managers have access to a PC dashboard where they can view all settings and alarms. They also receive reports for better decision-making. The solution provides remote analysis and remote control functions as well. “We give buildings a technical facelift,” he adds. IWMAC provides 24/7 monitoring that sends immediate alerts about any non-conformances causing excessive energy use. This could be anything from a valve leak in a heat pump to unnecessary use of an AC compressor. The faster the notification, the faster the problem can be corrected and energy can be saved. Since no two buildings are alike, IWMAC software is customised to the specifications of individual buildings. Parameters are set based on the building’s historical data, IWMAC’s long experience and data from thousands of similar buildings.

Solution speaks multiple “languages”

The IWMAC software ensures that all building systems can “talk” to each other, so they can work with each other rather than against each other. This results in better energy efficiency and reduced building costs. Moreover, owners can choose their service providers and equipment solutions, which may further optimise operations and lower costs.

“In the old days, if you had a Siemens system, for example, you were married to Siemens. With our solution, customers have freedom of choice. We give them their power back so they can make the best decisions for their situation,” explains Bjørnnes. In addition, IWMAC software is installed quickly and easily at a reasonable investment cost. This enables building owners to make crucial upgrades today rather than costly renovations years from now. It also increases the pace of energy optimisation in the property sector as a whole.

Worldwide push to decarbonise the building mass

Action is being taken nationally, internationally and supranationally to increase energy efficiency in buildings

The EU, for instance, has established strategies to decarbonise the national building stocks by 2050, and the Building Efficiency Accelerator, a UN partner, works with local governments around the globe to implement building efficiency measures. Such initiatives are creating a market for energy management systems, which IWMAC is capitalising on. Employing a B2B model, IWMAC is a global platform for local service providers who contract to install the solution in their customers’ buildings. IWMAC currently has 180 partners in seven countries, mostly in the Nordic region, and is now seeking new partners worldwide. “I’m excited that we can make a difference in the fight against climate change,” says Bjørnnes. “Our 20 years of experience have proven that we are one of the best software solutions in the field.
